4000 reasons to visit the 4000 Islands

We left Vang Vieng at around 1pm for our trip to the 4000 Islands. We took a small bus, a sleeper bus, another small bus and a boat to get here. We were tired when we pulled up here yesterday at midday but happy to be on this little island paradise, Don Det.

I absolutely love it here on this peaceful island. I can't even begin to explain the beauty that surrounds the island. The clear water, long sunsets, lazy days, bike riding and swimming.

Yesterday we rented bikes (10,000 Kip each for the day or $1.20 Aus) with our friend Kirsten from Germany and cycled over the aged bridge after paying our 25,000 Kip ($3.00 Australian) fee to the other island of Don Khon.

We checked out the Khone Falls and Pha Pheng waterfalls.

Went swimming.

Had lunch at a local restaurant.

We then cycled to see where dolphins sometimes can be seen.

Cycling was rather funny as along the way we had to negotiate with a lot of animals including large buffalo and pigs. We also had some little hitchhikers join us along the way...

Last night we met up again with the Kiwi boys at the 4000 Islands bar and had a fantastic night out chatting and laughing. Our waiter and friend Ben from the UK kept our drinks flowing and the live entertainment from New York guitar player Steve and San Francisco performer, Michael made for a great atmosphere.

While we are here we are staying on the sunset side of the island again sharing a bungalow with a bathroom for 25,000 Kip each a night ($3.00 Australian). Our guest house does an amazing breakfast of a french stick, eggs, fruit and coffee for 20,000 Kip ($2.40 Australian).

We will stay here a couple more nights as we are enjoying it.

If I were to come to Laos again I would certainly go to Luang Prabang, I would skip Vang Vieng and head straight to the 4000 Islands.

Love to you all,

Kim and Sonja
